Detailers Get Alot For A Little

A Young Boy And A Proud Father Wash the Competition Away

They were looking to buy a hotdog stand – after all, coneys and the beach go together like beer and bowling. But for the inspiration of a 13-year-old boy named Michael John Spellos, he and his dad Elias (better known as Louie), would be spreading relish rather than  relishing in the details of Virginia Beach’s Squeeky Clean cars and  trucks. “It was one hundred percent Michael John’s idea,” Louie says of  he and his son’s passion for their Squeeky Clean Detailing business,  “And it was such a great idea, we went that first night and bought a  new van to get started.
Since that day four years ago, we eat, sleep,  breath and dream Squeeky Clean Detailing.” Abandoning the restaurant idea without another thought, the Spellos’  attended two seminars at Detail King in Pittsburgh,  PA where they were saturated with exciting information about their newfound business  venture. They came away having bought and watched every video and DVD  available and studied techniques for paint and bodywork in order to  better advise customers with issues a detailer could not address or up. They gained hands-on experience in how to utilize the mobile carwash equipment; researched ways to efficiently mobilize the operation; readied themselves for successful marketing techniques, and then, invested in $2,000 worth of equipment to outfit their new van.
“We wanted to experience the full range of options available, because we were absolutely certain this was a business we could sink our hearts and not just our teeth, into. From the time we got back from training, we hit the ground running and four years later we are still operating 7 days a week, always starting early and oftentimes working into the night until 9 and 10 o’clock p.m.”
Hailing from Greek origins, the Spellos’ family had a long history in the restaurant business. Louie spent a couple of years in his native Greece studying for the priesthood and working in orphanages where he the needs of the poor and the abandoned. His Orthodox  Christian roots add much to Squeeky Clean’s unique outreach in the Virginia Beach area.
“Squeeky Clean is more than just detailing cars. It is about the people and their needs. We consider our customers an extension of our own family,” says Louie. Squeeky Clean steps in to help people with other needs than just cleaning their cars to perfection. If their car is due for state vehicle inspection, they take the car in and return it with an updated inspection decal.
When senior citizens need errands run or their yard mowed or raked, Squeeky Clean performs these duties. We often go to the family to clean their cars if they are unable for any reason to come to us. Families with children often have additional automotive cleaning needs such as spills, baby-related mishaps, and candy residue. These and other types of clean-ups require extended detailing services that Squeeky Clean provides, for no additional charge.

Squeeky Clean spares no expense with their customers. According to Louie, Squeeky Clean offers a high-end service at an average price. For example, they use fresh new sponges and brand new buffing towels on every car. And if you have ever stayed in a 5-star hotel, you are familiar with the hotel’s hospitality turndown services and the fine chocolates left on your pillow every night? Well, Squeeky Clean extends this 5-star service to its detailing customers by leaving microfiber towels on the console along with chocolates!
What about marketing - after all, Virginia Beach is a big busy place! “It’s true,” Louie admits, “There are a lot of detailers in the Virginia Beach area which includes Hampton Roads, Newport News, Norfolk and even Chesapeake, but none of them have the visibility or the reputation of Squeeky Clean.” Louie and Michael John find little reason to run as much as a Yellow Pages ad because the Squeeky Clean van is quite a hit with the people in its own right. Like a 3-sided rolling billboard - yep, just check out the roof - Michael John designed the graphics for the award-winning van with its popular little red car.
Then eight months ago, they added its recognizable blue track highlights. These attention-getting lighting effects run on a 120-volt car battery and can remain lit for up to 1-1/2 hours, allowing them the ability to draw customers after dark. Louie and Michael John then added two more unique features. “We have a marquee on the dashboard with our company motto: We Wash the Competition Away and on the top of the van, we have our name and contact information so anyone in a high-rise hotel or office building can spot us from their windows!”

Louie says confidently, “Everyone living at the beach is familiar with the Squeeky Clean van and it not only attracts adults, but is extremely popular with little kids as well.” In fact, it is the kids who often prompt the parents of locals and tourists to come to Squeeky Clean because of the variety of entertainment they offer for the kids: water hose fights and water balloon fights, as well as their love for the
bubble machine. While on-site at a shopping center parking lot, Squeeky Clean often provides giveaway promotions and prizes, as well as balloons for the kids.

Squeeky Clean meticulously washes their own vehicle every night because they know customers judge your work by the looks of your own house. They outfitted the van with easy-up canopies in case it rains and for extremely hot days when a shady spot at the beach offers comfort. They use Zymol and Meguiars products as well as ProWax, which they buy from local distributors; but they keep their eyes and ears open for new products that will enhance their high-end detailing experience. But in addition to setting up business in area shopping centers and beachside locations, Squeeky Clean attends local and area events such as festivals, car shows and public events. These types of events led to their being asked to detail a Corvette for the National Museum of
Corvettes.“If there is one absolute truth to be said about our Squeeky Clean Detailing business, it is to stress the passion Michael John and I both have for the work,”  Louie promises.
